Generally recognized as safe (GRAS) is an American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designation that a chemical or substance added to food is considered safe by experts, and so is exempted from the usual Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) food additive tolerance requirements.

"Current Good manufacturing practice", is part of a quality system covering the manufacture and testing of active pharmaceutical ingredients, diagnostics, foods, pharmaceutical products, and medical devices. GMPs are guidelines that outline the aspects of production and testing that can impact the quality of a product.

Organic certification is a certification process for producers of organic food and other organic agricultural products. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. It's a network of the national standards institutes of 163 countries, a non-governmental organization. In practice, ISO acts as a consortium with strong links to governments.

Halal Certification is a recognition that the products are permissible under Islamic law. These products are thus edible, drinkable or usable by Muslims.

Food in accord with halakha (Jewish law) is termed kosher in English, from the Ashkenazi pronunciation of the Hebrew term kasher (כָּשֵׁר), meaning "fit" (in this context, fit for consumption by Jews according to traditional Jewish law).

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point or HACCP, is a systematic preventive approach to food safety and pharmaceutical safety that addresses physical, chemical, and biological hazards as a means of prevention rather than finished product inspection.

The Foundation for Food Safety Certification was founded in 2004. The Foundation developed FSSC 22000, the ISO 22000 and PAS 220 based certification scheme for certification of food manufacturers.
